Read on for a description of each afternoon class offered, and to find out why art is so beneficial for kids!

on the left is a cute children's painting of a brown owl with large blue and green eyes. On the right is a painting of a dapper frog wearing a hat in front of its toadstool home. The painting is being held by a child's hands.

Little Picassos: ages 5-7. The foundational class for the youngest children to start their creative journey. Children learn art concepts and techniques, as well as develop their fine motor skills. Students have an opportunity to experiment with various art materials. The class is 45 minutes long - just long enough to create some fun art and practice patience, but not get too wiggly!

Awesome Art 1: ages 6.5-9.5. For the art-aware child, this class presents a variety of beginner to intermediate techniques. Children are encouraged to create more challenging art. The projects use a wider range of mediums and techniques. This class is 1-hour long.

Awesome Art 2: ages 9.5-13+. For children who are serious about their art! Artists learn a variety of finishing techniques in addition to building on existing skills. This class has more complex projects and allows young artists to develop their own unique style. This class is 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

Each class uses a range of techniques and materials gathered to challenge artists of every age. Students will learn skills that enrich every aspect of their young lives.

Studies have shown that art enrichment programs during the school year can have a hugely beneficial impact on a child's development. This includes children from preschool to high school! Some of the many benefits include:

Motor Skills and Coordination: Art tools like crayons, paint brushes, and scissors help children develop the use of small muscles in their hands and fingers. This same dexterity helps young children in day-to-day tasks like writing and getting dressed.

Language Development: Art projects are the perfect starting place for conversation and storytelling. While creating art, children can talk about the colors, shapes, and lines they make, and the story behind their art. In young children, this enhances vocabulary and communication.

Decision-Making Skills: While creating art, children make decisions about the colors they will use, the shapes they will make, and how they will put these together. As art projects become more complicated, they learn to do these things with intention. This practice helps children of all ages develop decision-making and problem-solving skills in other aspects of their lives.

Inventiveness and Imagination: In our art classes, we use guided lessons to keep the students engaged and set them up for success. Every lesson also has room for creativity and imagination. Playing is learning! This creative freedom helps children of all ages develop unique and expressive ideas, while still focusing on a goal.

Academic Performance: Studies show that there is a correlation between art education and academic performance. Children who actively participate in an art program are more likely to do better on standardized tests, have fewer disciplinary issues, and perform better in other subjects than children who do not participate in art programs.
